How Do Sump Pumps Work?

A sump pump is installed in a recessed pit at the lowest level of your basement. When water fills the pit, the pump turns on and removes the water. The pump shuts off automatically when the sump pump pit is free of water.

Because sump pumps are electric and will not turn on during a power outage, battery back-up sump pumps are also available for extra insurance against water damage.
