After a long winter here in Northern Michigan we are finally starting to warm up! That means summer is right around the corner and with that comes some hot, humid days. Even though you might not need it right now, early spring is the perfect time to make sure your air conditioning unit is ready to perform so you aren’t left sweating when you need it most! A simple way to remember to get your air conditioning checked is to add it to your annual spring cleaning list.
It is important to have your air conditioner checked before the summer heat hits for a couple reasons. The first is that it will be ready when you need it. You don’t want to be out of luck if you try turning on your AC on the first hot and humid day of the year and it doesn’t work. Most likely others will be making this mistake, as well, and HVAC companies will be extremely busy making house calls. It may take a few days for them to get to your home. The next reason is that you are able to find small issues that have cheap, simple fixes early on. Depending on the issue, some of these small problems can turn into major problems later on down the road if they aren’t fixed.
We have put together some tips that should be completed before turning on your air conditioner this summer:
- Turn on your air conditioner now. Make sure it’s running well and blowing cold air. You don’t want to be stuck with a broken AC unit on the first scorcher of the season.
- Be sure your condensing unit is not blocked by any obstructions. The condenser needs to draw in air that will then be used to cool your home. If people cover their AC unit in the winter, they can often forget to take the cover off before turning on their unit for the first time.
- Clear away all natural debris around your air conditioner. Leaves, sticks, newspapers, etc. can easily block your condenser once you start running it every day.
- Change your filters. Start off the summer right with a fresh air filter. When your AC is running your home will be closed up and it will be important to have clean filter to help with your home’s indoor air quality.
- Have one of our HVAC professionals come out and give your air conditioner a pre-season tune-up. This will ensure you AC unit is running at peak performance to efficiently cool your home for the upcoming summer.
